On May 11, 1908, the president of the Spanish Maritime League requested a study to install a lighthouse at Cape Ortegal . The Lighthouse Commission approved on January 15, 1912 «that the new lighthouse, included in the Lighting Plan, be located in Punta Candelaria.» It was designed in 1929 and completed in 1933 but was not inaugurated until early 1954 due to discussions about the convenience of the exact location.

In 1930, various organizations asked to remove the Punta Candelaria lighthouse and install a 60-mile range lighthouse and a direction-finding station at Cape Ortegal. The request was not successful and the characteristic that had been planned for it was changed to groups of 3 and 1 white flashes. In 2004 the façade and windows of the lighthouse building were restored and a new garage was built.
In 2005, a base station ( AIS ) was installed and in 2008 the remote supervision system was renewed, which sends data via ADSL to the Control Center at the Port Authority of Ferrol.
